The SMH Quote Of The Day: T-Pain Wants Royalties On All Autotune Songs!

Posted on November 30, 2008 5:09 PM

Look who's feeling himself right now.

T-Pain's recent comments on artists paying him for sampling his autotune sound has pissed off fans and entertainers a like.

Although the singer/producer didn't make the Auto-Tune software created by company Antares which starts around $300, he's asking others to pay him for bringing the sound effect back to the limelight.

In an interview with DJ Skee, T-Pain stated that artists such as Ron Browz have used the Auto-Tune effect poorly and also stated in a recent MTV News interview that those that have used it should pay up.

"Sign the papers," states T-Pain, who worked on Kanye West's new album "808's & Heartbreak". "Diddy actually gave me royalties on this album just for using Auto-Tune. He signed the contract and everything. If I can do that with Diddy, somebody else better be signing something. It's Diddy. He didn't have to involve me at all. ... I'm writing and producing on his album, and he gave me extra royalties on top of that for using something I just brought back."

This is one of those prime examples of how artists these days don't study their crafts.

Artists such as Prince, the late Roger Troutman, of the soul and funk band Zapp and Parliament-Funkadelic collective, have all been known for their use of the vocoder and even pop singer Cher used auto-tune in her 1998 song "Believe" before T-Pain was known.

Troutman is also known for singing the chorus to the hip-hop classic, "California Love" song by 2Pac featuring Dr. Dre who produced the track.

T-Pain really needs to sit his ass down somewhere.

Talk y'all lata,

Gayant you are a fag, and you dont listen. He said "brought back" the auto-tune vocoder sound. All the artist you have mentioned one of which being deceased (R.I.P. Roger) have not used the auto-tune in years. T-Pain is actually to be credited with bringing the use of this instrument back to popularity. Dude i wish sohh would fire cause you writing is shit, and all you topics revolve around hating on the next man. Kill yourself please.

lol. I don't know, I think t-pains kind of talking out his ass right now. Seeing how diddy broke him off basically what he's been scruffling to get for his life savings funds. no disrespect. T-Pains incredibly talented. INCREDIBLY. but the fact is yea you brought it back, but you dont own it, and youre not the creator, youre just a nigga who tried something out and got successful with it. Be happy 3 albums later people are actually interested in youre shit, and you didnt end up like half of these fly by night r&b singers.

Arrogance = death of entertainers
