First of all the word "nigga" has been used in and out of rap music for sometime. This word has been associated with not only black culture but the music as well which is fine, but what is not fine is the double standard africans have when it comes to race. Look at a majority of the stand up comedy gigs you see. You hear many many foul, degrading, racist words from these individuals and no uproar is made. This is confusing on lots of levels because what the african community is saying is that it's OK for us to bring down the opposite race but if one of them say anything remotely close to a racist comment his career will be ended and he will be humilated in front of all. Now it's not that I don't agree with the results of Imus being fired, but I don't agree with the double standards that are placed on our society. Until changes happen within the african culture, and it's addressed head on then we will continue to see situations like this appear. Kanye West is BY FAR the best producer in the game right now. The only person even close is Just Blaze. Mannie Fresh is also in their league. Those three are simply on another level. Alchemist, 9th Wonder, and Shawty Redd, Cool and Dre, and The Runners get honorable mention.

Respect due to all those who spoke from the heart on this forum. I've been interested in reading some opinions from hip-hop fans just before the culture comes under attack... again. We all know it's coming. Barack Obama fired the opening salvo with his speech the other day and while he made some interesting points, I know what was meant will be misinterpreted by most folks who are ignorant of what hip-hop truly is.

I've been listening to hip-hop music and watching the culture closely for as long as I can remember. As a white man, I have to admit that rap music (and later funk, reggae soul and jazz once I began to explore) spoke to me as a youth more than any other music ever could. I consider myself a student of hip hop culture. I'm not a teacher or a professor or some kind of wise ass who wants to tell you how to behave toward one another, what you should or shouldn't say to whom. That's not me.

The thing is I love your music and your culture from arms-length. Sometimes, I guess I get carried away. For all the Roots, Tribe, PE, Pete Rock, Rakim and KRS songs I have, I still have quite a few jams by NWA, Ice Cube, Cypress Hill, Geto Boys etc... I have the good sense to listen to these albums as I would watch a quality film like Goodfellas or Do the Right Thing. It's a caricature, an exaggeration of real life events. It's for entertainment, but it's for education as well. And alot of it is excellent music but the figures who bring it to us are tragic in that they can be their own worst enemy. They bring down the disdain from other people themselves with their refusal to wisen up and seperate themselves from their own art.

I'll share a story from my youth. When I was 15, NWA released their final album as a group. You remember the name of it, I don't have to repeat it. But another white friend of mine and I were huge fans of gangsta rap for the reasons I've stated previously and we sat in school one day reciting some of our favorite verses, laughing and enjoying ourselves, oblivious to the loaded words we were spitting out one after another. A black teacher, a woman of significant standing in the school and in our community heard us and confronted us about what we'd been rapping. She was furious and asked us our names. It didn't even occur to me that she might march me down to the office and have me kicked out of school for saying racial slurs. She didn't know who we were or who our black friends were and that we were definitely not racists. We explained what we were doing and she looked disgusted, told us to watch our language and stormed off. We thought it was funny at the time.

But now I know it's not. I'm sorry about that. And I'm willing to do my part to help educate people about this beautiful music. They may not understand but hip hop will never truly die. Sometimes, like any kind of art, it goes through low periods of creativity and innovation and this is certainly one of those moments. Maybe we can make a positive out of this pressure and help promote the artists who are promoting knowledge, wisdom, culture and peace.

That's exactly what we'll do.

I say nigger, and I'm a Black man, and I don't have a problem with it. If a White person says it to me, I do. Why? Because what in the fuck does a White person know about being a nigger? When I call one of my peoples the word, it's because I know that on some level or another they know what it's like to be treated like a nigger... to be hated and discriminated against simply because of the color of your skin. Not that you've done anythign worng, but simply because of the color of your skin.

It is a term of endearment for me, but it's more than that too. It's a sense of empowerment. I'm taking something that was meant to destroy me and I'm making it a source of strength and unity. I love my niggas and my niggas love me.

As far as Don Imus goes, when did we (I mean Whites and Blacks) decide that Blacks can only do something if Whites do it? So what Imus heard rappers saying it? Is he a rapper? No. So then why is he saying it? As a matter of fact, race aside, when did it become OK to do something that you know is wrong because someone else was doing it too? What are we all in 5th grade again? And white people (and some people of color) are coming to his defense? I feel like I'm losing my mind.

What does Hip Hop's influence have to do with a 50 year old, white millionaire with a syndicated radio talk show disrespecting Black women? How weak of an individual is he if he can't break through the influence that Hip Hop has on him, and do what he's supposed to? That's something a child says to try to excuse the wrong that they've done. He's not a child. He's a grown ass man. Why are we even entertaining that idea?

I hear rappers talk about how police are abusive. Why ain't Imus calling cops the cops out? In fact, I probably hear that just as much as I do songs about hos. What, Hip Hop was strong enough to influence him to say nappy headed ho, but not to want to call out the crooked ass cops? Or are we seeing what I'm gonna call "selective-influence"? Hip Hop's influence my ass.

Regarding Snoop, I agree with him. Rappers ain't talking about their mothers and sisters and friends. They're talking about women who act like hos. Why can't they talk about it if that's what these women are doing? Ain't that what Hip Hop's all about? Keeping it real? Why can't they keep it real, then?

And if Imus and the rest of the ignorants actually took the time to listen to what these rappers were saying, instead of just bobbing their heads to the beat and trying to be "cool" by using words without understanding the context or meaning surrounding them, perhaps we wouldn't even have to have this discussion. But they don't. The influence of Hip Hop is not so strong that they are forced to really pay attention to what's being said... it's just strong enough to make them think that it's Ok to call successful Black women "nappy headed hos". Awesome.

Is Snoop the best role model? No. But what does that have to do with the fact that what he said is right. Don Imus ain't a rapper, so therefore his argument that because rappers said it he could say it too don't hold any water.

My overall point is this. Stop blaming Hip Hop for ignorant as remarks and activities. How about we all act like adults, and do the things that we're supposed to do? That way, it won't matter what rappers say, because we as adults will be handling ourselves like adults, and not looking for reasons to be ignorant. It would probably help our kids to figure out what they're supposed to be doing too, now wouldn't it. I believe it's called being a role-model (you know, the same thing we're gettin on Snoop about but we're not doing ourselves?).

Lastly, Sandy, why don't you worry about getting ignorant White people to stop acting like assholes first. Then, when you figure out how to do that successfully, you can come over and offer some critiques about how BLack people should be conducting themselves. You guys don't even got your shit together. How you gonna tell us what we need to do? Nevermind everybody else, how about you worry about you worry about yourself (the same thing my grandmother used to tell me when I was a kid)?

Response: I knew this comment was going to be taken out of context, so please allow me to clarify:

It's not Common in particular I have a problem with, but rather the ideology that all hip-hop has got to be either mindless party music or super-preachy. Hip Hop is a huge tree with many branches on it, but they all have to be cultivated and allowed to grow and blossom. It's not one side or the other that's killing the music, it's the cultivators that unnessesarily clip off branch after branch and not allow it to grow. You know what's wrong with black radio today? No selection, the same bullshit 7 or 8 songs over and over and over--the major labels deciding what's best for us instead of allowing us to decide what's best for ourselves. I admit that snap music gives me a headache, but it's just party music--like Kool & the Gang, Parlament Funkadelic, Tone Loc, or the Jackson 5. We need to stop trying to "crush this" and "bury that" and start letting the major labels and local radio stations know that we want more variety--if not, then Rap music will TRUELY meet it's demise.

I find it quite interesting that you seem to be so offended over the "cheese sandwich" remark, yet when it comes to the "nappy head" reference, you blow it off and claim that 'this is not what whites are so angry about'. I disagree for these reasons:

- The proof, as they say, is in the pudding. Every white person on this thread has made the same case again and again--the old 'you say it, why can't we' defense. This suggests to me that many whites are either a). Too ignorant to realize that there saying something that's horribly offensive, or b). Too arrogant and obnoxious to care.

i do understand what snoop means about the word "ho". i'm a black woman who is married, successful, and independant. i know he is not referring to my type. there are ho's black, white, and brown that do fit the criteria. the women on the basketball team definitely were not representing that type of negative stereotype and imus disrespected them. unfortunately, white America feels that if blacks can call other blacks out of their name then so can they- hell naw!too many blacks are dead and in the ground behind racial slurs that were used by whites. i'm from mississippi and my stomach hurts to hear the n word. being the only black female at my job, the subject came up and the white people said they don't mind being called cracker. i said probably not, nobody was killed or oppressed with that word but if ya call me a nigga that's ya ass and my job!a friend once told me it takes one black person to make a thousand blacks look bad but a thousand whites to make one white look bad. the point, people judge us by the minority not the majority so we have to choose our words carefully. i'm sad to say we live in this type of society but also we are a blessed people and other races deep down really know that so they are going to hate. this incident is just one of many that we will have to rise above. god bless!
